The new elevator safety standard EN81-20/50, issued in Europe in 2014, requests that lights in case of power failure be installed on the elevator cage as a new measure to improve the level of safety. An elevator designer was having a hard time choosing the right illumination that runs on the pre-installed 12V/24V emergency batteries. The brightness required by the standard needed to be satisfied as well.

Among IDEC’s LED lighting, the customer adopted products that met their needs. It was the LED lighting that consumes less energy yet provides sufficient brightness, and satisfies the standard requirements.

The challenge: quality and cost when adding illumination that meets the new elevator safety standard
The new elevator safety standard requires the following:5 lux or higher illumination for 1 hour or more at:
" Alarm monitoring devices inside and above the car.
" 1m above the floor at the center inside the car.
" 1m above the floor at the center above the car.
" Lights above the car in case of power failure.
The elevator engineer was looking for illumination that would ensure safety while meeting cost requirements. The level of safety is mandated by the new elevator safety standard EN81-20/50, which is also expected to be adopted by the Japan Industrial Standards (JIS) and China National Standards (GB).

Energy-saving elevator lights needed for power failure
Increasing the number of lighting locations means the need for extra power source. Also the amount of electricity increases in proportion to the intensity of light. Incandescent bulbs are inexpensive and easy to install, which is superior in terms of cost. However, when it comes to the level of luminance required by the standard, the battery needs to be larger due to the increased power consumption, and might weigh heavier. Product life for incandescent bulbs is short, resulting in frequent replacement and maintenance.

The performance that the customer was looking for in the additional lighting can be summarized down to: the power to the light can be fed from the small emergency battery installed on the elevator, lighting for an hour or more, and luminance of 5 lux or higher. Here, the customer looked at the energy-saving industrial LED units of IDEC.

“It was such a tough situation where if we focused on luminance, cost would be too high. If we focused on cost, luminance would not be enough, which would not meet the requirement of the standard. We were happy that IDEC showed us products that solved both problems with just one product.” Considering the environment where lights will be installed, IDEC proposed the LF1B-N series and the LF2B series LED illumination units.

Both units are dust-proof (IP65) and low power consumption of 1.5W to 2.9W, and they run on 12V or 24V DC and very bright. The customer loved the slim shape which is easy to install even after the development. The customer is also counting on us for IDEC’s future proposals, with our expertise of elevator standards and related laws and abundant product lineup.

LF2B has wide range of voltages from 10.8V to 30V and can be selected as blackout emergency lamps on elevators under unstable power environment.
